North Pacific humpback whales, a mother and calf pair swim closely together just under the surface of the ocean. The calf will remain with its mother for about a year, migrating from Hawaii to Alaska to feed on herring.

Phillip Colla is a photographer and natural history writer specializing in wild marine mammals, the California kelp forest, and inhabitants of remote eastern Pacific islands. His photographs, including images of whales, dolphins and pinnipeds, are primarily taken while breath-hold diving.
